February 2nd, 1848
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo is signed, officially ending the Spanish-American war and surrendering northern Mexican territories to the United States.
Although California was included in this treaty, it did not become an "American" state until September 1850, five months after Los Angeles had claimed itself self-governed.
